Retro DOS Review: D/GENERATION!

D/GENERATION - Isometric action puzzle game that provides plenty of challenge.

Challenging and fun, this puzzle/action game is set in a futuristic corporate office tower that has run amok with genetically created creatures. You are the nameless courier (who arrives on the roof by jetpack, of course), who is hellbent on doing his job of delivering a package to Mr. Derrida, the CEO of the Genoq corporation. Nothing slows him down as he tackles multiple different types of genetic experiments, grenade shooting tubes, electric floor tiles, and a number of other furnishings whose purpose is to kill you.

Your objective is to move room by room, floor by floor, clearing each room by defeating the creatures, avoiding traps, and making it safe to rescue people you find along the way. It's definitely a necessity to talk to everyone, as they'll not only tell you the story of what happened at the building, but also more important things like passwords to computer terminals that open doors. You're armed with a trusty laser gun, and if you're lucky enough to find them, grenades and shields that can make certain rooms much easier. Many rooms will be closed off to you along the way, requiring either a security keycard or solving a puzzle to open them up. Some rooms need careful planning to not be fried to a pulp in an instant to move to the next, where the prize in other rooms may be rescuing multiple people (which also gives you more lives), or bonus grenades.

No speed changes or anything is needed to play at a good pace. IMPORTANT: I only recommend playing on a keyboard that has a full numberpad. This allows you to use the 1, 3, 7, and 9 buttons which act as diagonal movement. It's possible to play through without it, but it would be much harder. If you primarily use a laptop without a full number pad, any USB keyboard can be plugged into it to make use of better controls. Alternatively, you could probably change the keyboard profile in D-Fend to use letter keys like the number pad, but that's more work than necessary.

D/GENERATION can be downloaded form Abandonia.com HERE. IMPORTANT: In D-Fend, when you hit "Import Archive File" to install the game, there will be a dropbox that says "Program File". Choose the file called "DGENVGA.EXE". This is the better looking version, and the regular one doesn't seem to work right. Hope you love this one as much as I do! Let me know!
