Indie Game Review: Revenge of the Titans

Tower defense games are a dime a dozen.  Few really shine like this one does.

Never played a tower defense game?  It's easy.  You have a base to defend.  Hoards of enemies are thrown at you in rapid succession.  Your job is to build enough defenses to keep your base from being destroyed.  Lather. Rinse. Repeat.  Of course, it's not all that repetitive, at least not in a good one.  Revenge of the Titans succeeds in a making a simple enough game to understand, that provides plenty of challenge for any level of player, open concept campaign play, an in-depth upgrade and research tree, and an expansion available to get a sandbox mode to make your own levels and campaign, share-able on the internets.

The Titans are a PacMan-esque race of aliens that want nothing more than to chow down on your base.    You start off with a meager assortment of weapons and defenses, and it's up to you to dispense them in the best places to keep the Titans at bay.  After each mission, you get some funds (how much depends on your performance), to upgrade weapons, research new technologies, and get future mission bonuses.  The designers did a great job varying the research tree enough that your strategies can be completely different from another player's.

The game has some kind of adaptive difficulty, which I assume is based on how well you do each mission.  The highest difficulty is very challenging, but not obnoxiously hard (except for the Saturn Boss. Screw that guy.)  The rest of the bosses are a nice addition, and are thrown in by surprise sometimes to make it pretty exciting. Two additional modes are included in addition to the campaign (Endless and Survival), which are both good fun.  The enemies are numerous and unrelenting, but no worries, these coffee-crazed army men will prevail with your help.

Revenge of the Titans is available HERE on DVD, and also as a digital download on Steam.
